The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
