The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
