Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
